Opinionated Fat Guy

A week ago I wrote confident that I’d be updating my tumblr daily and that my time in Ellijay would be used to read, write, and generally pursue creative endeavors. Truth be told, it has been anything but…and I’m okay with that.

I’ve spent the last few days seeing neighboring small towns with a long time family friend whose known me since I was a kid and going to dinnners and barbeques with her and my moms extended group of friends. When not doing either of those things, I’ve been idling my days laying about or watching tv…in essence doing nothing and loving it.

It’s been a tough few months and both my brain and my body have welcomed the time to recuperate and rest in the calm of the mountains and small town America.

Last December when I flew in for the day with my mom to check out properties to possibly purchase, I remember explicitly saying “I hope you and dad enjoy it, cause I know I’ll never come up here” yet now at the otherside of a weeklong visit I can see the appeal of the serene rural setting.

I will forever be a city boy (this trip also confirmed that) but I have come away with a new found respect and appreciation for the restorative benefits of simplified country life.

Steel, concrete, skyscrapers and subways will always be home but a week or so of log cabins and wilderness every so often helps it all make sense.
