Random thoughts…
Last Wednesday my boyfriend was part of a massive 40% layoff from an online social media network company which will remain nameless (No- it’s not the one everyone knows about…it’s the one no one knows about). He was unhappy for sometime but was ready to stick with it in order to pay the bills. As unpleasant as a layoff is, I can only think that this was a mixed blessing. It not only got him out of a situation where he was unhappy but it gave him the impetus to try his hand at something he has always wanted to: being a self-employed freelancer(which he is going to be really successful as). So while he wasn’t completely heartbroken, he was slightly bummed out which meant a night of getting drunk…but he’s one of those no-tolerance-for-alcohol Asian-Americans you read about in place like this, so getting drunk really means one drink. But I digress.
The next day he got on a plane to Miami for a 10-day trip to see me. This happens to be my busiest time of the year- a time when stress levels are high and patience is low. The truth is that if he had said to me, “listen with all thats going on I feel like I should just stay home and sort things out”, I would totally have understood but he didn’t. He got on a plane, flew across the country and for the days that followed he was the most supportive, loving, caring and helpful he could have been. It meant a lot and it always will, and while I am sure he could use the distraction from his own stresses…he could’ve easily done that in the Bay area hanging with friends than in Miami with my neurotic self in rare form. (He did get a weekend in Key West with the BFF which he welcomed with screeches of relief. I understood that.)
In a few days the craziness of my event will be over, and I’ll take a few days to rest and recuperate while counting down the next time that we’re together. For now- I’ll just smile at the long days we had together and the nights that we got to spend laying with one another….even if they were occasionally disrupted by work, Chita Rivera or pink bikini wearing Lesbians engaging in rigorous activities next door. That, however, is for another post.
